In this article I’ll show you how to install WordPress themes in three easy steps – (1) download, (2) upload and (3) activate. That’s all you need to change the design of your WordPress website.
How to Install a WordPress Theme
But before we get to the nuts and bolts of installing WordPress themes, you have to choose the theme you want to install (if you haven’t already found one you like, you can see my recommendations here).
Step 1 – Download
The first thing you have to do is to download the WordPress theme to your computer. And make sure to remember the folder you download it to, so you can find it again in the next step.
Note: If you chose a free theme from the WordPress directory, you can skip this step and install it directly from your WordPress Dashboard (under “Appearance” > “Themes” > “Install Themes”).
Step 2 – Upload
The easiest way to upload your theme is under “Appearance” > “Themes” in the menu on the left in your WordPress Dashboard (to log in to your WordPress Dashboard go to yoursite.com/wp-admin).
There you have to click the “Install Themes” tab at the top of the page. Then click “Upload” (you’ll find this right below the tabs). Now browse to the folder you downloaded the theme to, choose it and click “Install Now”.
The alternative way of uploading your theme, is by extracting it on your computer and then uploading the files to the wp-content/themes/ folder. This can be done either through ftp or the file manager in your cPanel.
And if you’re installing a WordPress theme directly from the WordPress directory you can type in the name of the theme in the search field or use the filters to find a theme you like.
Step 3 – Activate
When the upload is done you can preview the theme by clicking the “Live Preview” or just click “Activate” and your new design is live.
Now that you know how to change wordpress theme, you are ready to head back and continue to the next step in the create a website from scratch-guide.
